A virgin priestess is dancing, wearing apparel that resembles the ancestors, to the sounds of the drums. Eventually, she will become possessed whereby she will communicate with one ancestor. The ancestor will tell her what to expect in the coming year. The priestess stops dancing after each message she receives from the ancestor and shouts in Fante what the ancestor is telling her.
The festival takes place during the harvest season of both yams and fish. On Thursday there is an abundance of food throughout the street market.
Cross-dressing is one of the festival apparels...I actually don't know why. (But this guy was very offended when I tried to grab his fake boob!)
Some other crazy costumes...
There were many Kings, Queens and Chiefs that attended the festival. The Kings and Queens are held ontop of their carriers' heads with their drummers marching behind them. Many people choose to dance and wave cloths to the Kings and Queens (I preferred to dance by the Queens...Women dominance...). The Chiefs would walk, but were surrounded by people wearing their color (either red, green, yellow or blue)
This was a team of dancers that performed in front of the Queen. They literally danced the whole 3 hours while marching down the main street.
